OCTOBER — A MONTH OF AWARENESS, SERVICE & COMMUNITY

October is a month of awareness, appreciation, celebration, and community engagement. As the leaves change and the year begins to wind down, we are reminded of the importance of caring for one another, recognizing those who make a difference, and continuing to invest in our communities.
October is a month of colorful change, as leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, brown, and red. It’s a time for Halloween decorations, candy corn, costumes, football games, and cheering for favorite teams. Historically, almanacs portray October as a transitional period, marking the end of the harvest and the start of winter preparations.
This month we will celebrate two of the many recognizable holidays of the month:

Indigenous People Day, a federal holiday, is observed on the second Monday in October. It was on October 12, 1492, that Christopher Columbus landed on a small island in the Bahamas, convinced that he had reached Asia.

October 31 is Halloween. It is the largest non-religious holiday celebrated. Whether you are bobbing for apples, dressing up in a spooky costume, trick or treating, carving pumpkins, watching horror movies are being aware of all the superstitions associated with it adults and children alike participate in some aspect of the Halloween traditions.
I hope October serves as a reminder that every act of kindness, every educational opportunity, and every effort to support others can make a meaningful difference.
